The Diploma Core
The three courses that make up the Diploma Curriculum Framework’s core are required of all students enrolled in the Diploma Programme. The idea behind the Diploma Programme is based on a paradigm that places reflection on all of these activities at its core.
- Complete an Extended Essay (EE)
- Follow a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK)
- Participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
The Extended Essay (EE), a lengthy written assignment of up to 4,000 words, gives students the chance to research a subject of particular interest that they have themselves selected. Additionally, it encourages students to acquire the independent research abilities that universities will demand.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course challenges students to consider the nature of knowledge, to consider how they learn across all of the subjects they study for their diploma, and to draw links between various academic disciplines.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) lets students engage in experiential learning through a variety of artistic, sports, physical, and service-related activities. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery.
